TIPS ON HOW TO HAVE A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS

With Christmas just around the corner, many of us are beginning to consider our impact on the planet at this time of year. We all love to enjoy the festive season but there are so many ways to do this whilst also considering the environment.

So here are KEEPER Denim’s top 6 tips on how to have a sustainable Christmas:

  1. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Have you ever received a gift you didn’t really want? – I’m sure that’s a familiar feeling we have all had at some point over the years. That’s why we decided years ago in my family to do a secret Santa. So rather than having to buy one gift for each family member, we only buy one gift. This gives us the opportunity to spend more time deciding on the perfect gift.

  1. GIFT AN EXPERIENCE

Instead of buying a product as a gift, have you considered buying a gift voucher for an experience? There are so many great websites that offer these, the first one that comes to mind is Red Balloon – they offer a range of experiences from dinners to skydiving. The best part about this option is it reduces resources!

  1. SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

When shopping for gifts, make sure to look at the materials that the products are made from to ensure you select options that are made from sustainable materials. For example, if you are looking at clothes, check the labels to see that they are made of sustainable, natural fibres including organic cotton, hemp or wool.

  1. REDUCE PACKAGING

Look at the packaging of the products before you buy them. Buying from small local businesses is a great option for this as they often use plastic free packaging.

  1. SUSTAINABLE WRAPPING

Every year there are so many new trends when it comes to wrapping your gifts, but why not think about more sustainable options that look great too! For example, you could reuse wrapping paper from previous gifts you’ve received or wrap your gifts with materials that can be recycled such as plain paper (no glitter on it) or even fabric!

  1. FOOD

So much food is wasted ever year from Christmas day as we tend to buy more than we need for fear of running out! So, when it comes to planning your meal for Christmas day, make sure to go shopping with a grocery list, so you only buy the items that you need and don’t end up panic buying. Don’t forget on boxing day - make sure you eat all those leftovers. There are plenty of recipes you can use to create new dishes by reusing the food leftover from Christmas day.

I hope you enjoyed this KEEPER Denim blog post on tips on how to have a sustainable Christmas this year.
