SECOND HAND VS. NEW FASHION

When it comes to updating your wardrobe to be more sustainable – you can choose to either purchase new or second hand pieces.

Did you know the average Australian throws out approximately 23kg of clothing each year? That is a huge amount of clothing that ends up landfill and has a negative impact on our planet. So, it goes to show there is a big market for purchasing second hand clothes if you want to reduce the amount of waste your clothes create each year. We at KEEPER Denim have come up with a list of pros and cons for purchasing second hand, so you can weigh up the options and decide for yourself:

PROS FOR SHOPPING SECOND HAND FASHION

SAVE MONEY

It’s true, not all second hand clothing is cheaper than new items, but in many cases it is.

EXTEND THE LIFE CYCLE

When it comes to ethical and sustainable lifestyles, extending the life cycle of a product is so important. By opting for second hand, you are preventing a piece of clothing from going to landfill.

REDUCE OVER CONSUMPTION

In a world filled with fast fashion - low quality clothing, made to last just one season - by purchasing second hand and extending the lifecycle of each piece, you are also helping to reduce over consumption. That is, reduce the amount of clothes that end up in landfill every year.

CONS FOR SHOPPING SECOND HAND FASHION

FAULTY ITEMS

When you purchase new items you’re protected by return policies, so if something was to go wrong, you have a fallback. However, when you buy second hand this is often not available.

A RELIABLE SOURCE

When you buy new clothes, they are usually from a business – an entity you know and trust. When it comes to second hand clothing, there are many options for where you can buy them from, including businesses such as online apps and vintage stores. However, you can also buy them from individuals on online marketplaces such as Facebook or Gumtree, which does make the purchase a little riskier as you can’t guarantee the quality of the pieces you are buying.

AGE

Given second hand clothes are older, depending on the quality, the clothes are going to have a shorter life-span.
